Made Smarter grants: up to £20,000 for SME manufacturers to digitise in 2026

Made Smarter held its first national Adoption Awards this June, and the programme behind them offers SME manufacturers up to £20,000 in match funding plus free digital roadmapping. Here's how to use it well.

The short answer: UK manufacturing SMEs can access up to £20,000 in match-funded grants plus free digital roadmapping through Made Smarter, the government's digital adoption programme. This June the programme held its first national Adoption Awards - and the winners are ordinary small manufacturers (a cheese producer, a dietary foods maker, a chocolate maker, a drone supplier), not tech companies. The message for every SME on the shop floor: this support is designed for you.

What happened this month?

Regional winners from Made Smarter's adoption programmes across the North West, West Midlands, North East and Yorkshire headed to the programme's first national Adoption Awards in June 2026 - businesses like Bridge Cheese, Firstplay Dietary Foods, heliguy and Choc Affair. In the same fortnight, London Tech Week saw the Tech Nation 2026 report confirm that AI adoption among UK SMEs has climbed to 54%, up from 35% a year earlier. Digital adoption in small firms has tipped from early-adopter territory into the mainstream.

What does Made Smarter actually offer?

  • Match-funded grants up to £20,000 towards software, automation and integration projects
  • Free digital roadmapping - a structured look at your processes and where technology pays back fastest
  • Leadership and skills support, so the change sticks after the project ends

Since launch the programme has invested £112 million in direct grants, engaged over 800 organisations and upskilled more than 8,000 people. By 2027 the goal is regional access for every SME manufacturer in the UK. Details are on the Made Smarter site.

What should a small manufacturer spend it on?

The award winners share a pattern: they didn't buy robots first. They fixed information flow - stock and inventory visibility, digital job sheets, connecting the office systems to the shop floor. That matches our experience exactly: the best first project is usually the most boring one. We've written up the reasoning in Automate the Most Boring Tasks First.

Strong grant-sized candidates we see for £200k–£1M turnover manufacturers:

  • Replacing paper job cards and re-keyed orders with a single digital flow from quote to invoice
  • Stock and inventory automation with barcode scanning, feeding accounting directly
  • Connecting a legacy machine or ERP to modern reporting - a live dashboard instead of Friday spreadsheets
  • Automated quality and compliance records, photographed and filed by the system rather than a person

Do you need to be technical to apply?

No. The roadmapping is designed for non-technical owners, and a good delivery partner handles the technical detail. What you need is a clear view of where hours leak: which tasks your team does twice, which numbers you can't see until month end.

FAQ

Who qualifies for Made Smarter funding? SME manufacturing and engineering businesses in participating English regions - check your region on the Made Smarter site.

Is the grant really match funding? Yes - typically up to 50% of project cost, capped at £20,000, with your business funding the balance.

What projects get approved? Practical adoption projects: software, systems integration, automation and data - not speculative R&D.

How do we pick the right project? Start from the process that wastes the most time, not the shiniest technology. The free roadmapping helps; so does an independent audit of your current systems.

If you're considering an application, we'll happily help you scope it - and build a small proof of concept of the automation first, so your grant application describes something you've already seen working.
